5 Bullet Friday with Conor Maher
Thanks for joining us for another 5 Bullet Friday! This bi-monthly post gives you insight into what the people of Conjura are loving, using, reading, watching, thinking about that week. Do go back and check out our previous 5BFs with:
This week’s 5BF introduces our Senior Systems Engineer Conor Maher!
What I’m listening to:
I’ve been listening to a lot of Darknet Diaries, a colleague Phil Corr recommended it and I’ve been working my way through the back catalogue since. Darknet Diaries is a podcast about hackers, data breaches, cybercrime and security. Episodes are narrated really well and often unfold like a ghost story! It’s accessible to a general audience with just enough gritty detail for a security nerd like me.
Some slightly more practical podcasts that are always in my rotation: Corey Quinn’s Screaming in the Cloud and The AWS Morning Brief are essential for anyone attempting to stay on top of what’s happening in the Cloud space.
What I’m watching:
Formula 1. I’ve always been impressed with the engineering and logistics of Formula 1. It’s only in recent years that I’ve been following the sporting aspect closely and really paying attention. Liberty Media acquired Formula 1 in 2017 and have totally transformed the approach to social media and fan engagement. You only have to look at the growth of their YouTube channel and the award winning Netflix documentary series Drive to Survive which has brought millions of new fans to the sport.
It fascinates me that 10 teams are operating within a set of guidelines and rules but must design their own car, the top teams often qualify with only a couple of tenths of a second separating the cars. It shows that design, engineering and drivers are extracting every possible ounce of performance from the car, 100s of marginal gains stack up. Their relentless pursuit of performance is impressive.
Interesting work happenings:
We are currently laying the foundations for the future of the Conjura platform, preparing to ingest, transform and find insights in orders of magnitude more data is a great challenge.
Like many people, I changed jobs during the pandemic, it’s really odd to close the lid of one laptop, and open the lid of another and suddenly find yourself part of a new adventure. Conjura engineering always had a fantastic remote-first culture and getting up to speed quickly was easy as there was a lot of documentation and tooling in place to support distributed teams. I think the team has tripled in size since I joined and we’ve managed to maintain that great culture. I’m humbled by the great talent we have managed to attract from all over the world.
Shameless plug: If you are passionate about building cloud infrastructure why not join us!
As a Kilkenny native The Cat Laughs was always one of my favorite times of the year. Luckily this year they managed to run a “Summer Series” a little later in the summer and I managed to see the excellent Dreamgun at an outdoor gig. It was so great to get to a comedy gig for the first time in 18 months.
Things I’m enjoying:
After many years of laziness I’ve been back training consistently which has been great. I head to the gym at lunchtime and it’s been great to have that structure in my day.
We got two rescue cats about a year ago and the novelty has not worn off! I am fascinated watching them, we recently built a catio for them and one of them spends most of his day keeping me company on my desk.
